Abstract

Contemporary Islamic education faces new challenges in shaping students who are not only intellectually intelligent, but also emotionally and spiritually mature. This study aims to reconstruct the classical values of tazkiyatun nafs in order to strengthen the emotional intelligence of modern students through a comparative analysis between the thoughts of al-Ghazali, a classical Islamic scholar, and Daniel Goleman, a contemporary psychologist known as the originator of the concept of emotional intelligence in modern psychology. Using a qualitative approach with a literature study, this research examines the integration between the spiritual dimension of Islam and modern psychological theory. The results of the study show that al-Ghazali's concept of purification of the soul is in line with the principles of self-awareness, empathy, and emotional control proposed by Daniel Goleman. The integration of the two gives rise to an educational paradigm that emphasizes a balance between emotional intelligence and spirituality. Thus, the values of tazkiyatun nafs are relevant to be applied in contemporary Islamic education as the basis for character building that is noble, adaptive, and resilient to the challenges of the times.
