Abstract

This research explores Imam Al-Shāṭibī's views on Islamic education and its relation to modern education. Al-Shāṭibī, a famous uṣūl al-fiqh scholar, is noted for his methodical articulation of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, which prioritizes public welfare (maṣlaḥah) as the main goal of Islamic This study uses library research techniques to analyze Al-Shāṭibī's key works and pertinent secondary material using a qualitative methodology. To understand his ideas on Islamic education's goals, methods, and direction, descriptive-analytical and philosophical methodologies are used. According to Al-Shāṭibī, education helps actualize maṣlaḥah, combine revelation and reason, nurture moral character, and utilize progressive and contextual learning processes. Islamic education aims to preserve the five essential purposes of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah: religion, intellect, life, lineage, and property, ensuring civilizational sustainability. Al-Shāṭibī's ideas are still useful for current Islamic education, notably in character education, merging religious and modern sciences, and fostering critical thinking within Islamic ideals. He provides a solid intellectual framework for comprehensive, flexible, and value-oriented Islamic education.
