Abstract

This research examines the manganan tradition at the Suroloyo Cemetery in Perbon Village, Tuban, as a form of religious acculturation between Islam and Javanese culture, specifically within the context of the tolak bala (warding off misfortune) belief during the month of Suro. The primary focus of this study is to explore the forms and implementation of the tradition, the process of acculturation involved, and its social and religious functions for the local community. Utilizing a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, the data were gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with Mbah Saminah as the key elder informant, and documentation studies. The findings indicate that the manganan tradition is held exclusively during the month of Suro (Muharram) within the cemetery grounds, notably without the use of offerings (sesaji) or incense. The proceedings begin with the recitation of Yasin and tahlil, followed by communal dining and food sharing. The acculturation process is dynamic, preserving Javanese cultural elements such as the manganan feast, gotong royong (communal cooperation), and the significance of the month of Suro, while integrating Islamic values through prayers, religious teachings (pengajian), and the purification of practices. Socially, the tradition serves as a means of integration, redistribution, recreation, and education. Religiously, it functions as a medium to pray for ancestors and seek protection from misfortune. In conclusion, the manganan tradition at Suroloyo Cemetery represents a harmonious synthesis between Islam and local culture, which persists due to the collective consciousness of the community regarding its inherent virtues.
