This study is motivated by the limited research on the role of mosques in shaping Islamic civilization in coastal communities, despite its significant impact on religious identity and social life at the local level. The study aims to analyze the role of mosques in shaping Islamic civilization in Panyuran Village, Palang District, Tuban Regency, and to identify the dynamics of interaction between Islamic values and local traditions. The research adopts a qualitative case study approach, involving mosque administrators and community members selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that the mosque plays a strategic role as a center of worship, education, social activities, and preservation of religious traditions, as well as a mediator in the interaction between Islamic values and local culture. These findings align with the research objectives and support the theory that mosques function as multidimensional institutions in Muslim societies. The study concludes that an active mosque significantly contributes to shaping a religious and harmonious Islamic civilization in coastal communities. The implications include theoretical contributions to the study of local Islam and practical recommendations for mosque management and communities to optimize the mosque’s role in social and religious development. Additionally, this study highlights opportunities for future research on the role of mosques in responding to modernization and technological changes in coastal societies.
