Abstract

This study explores the reactualization of the reading-writing command (iqra’) in Surah Al-‘Alaq verses 1–5 as the foundation for the revival of Islamic intellectuality in the modern era. It is motivated by the decline of literacy and scholarly culture among Muslims, contrasting with the flourishing intellectual tradition of the classical period. The study aims to examine the theological and epistemological meanings of iqra’, analyze its role in shaping Islamic intellectual traditions, and propose ways to revitalize its values in contemporary education. A qualitative library research method was employed, using descriptive and historical-philosophical analysis of relevant tafsir, books, and scholarly articles. The findings reveal that the command of iqra’ emphasizes the integration of revelation and reason as the basis of knowledge, which once fostered a great Islamic civilization. In the modern context, the current literacy crisis requires a revitalization of iqra’s values to restore critical and intellectual awareness within the Muslim community.
