This paper discusses the hadith about leaving doubtful matters (syubhat), which is narrated by al-Hasan ibn Ali and recorded in Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Sunan al-Nasa'i. The hadith teaches that a person should leave something that causes doubt and choose something that is more certain. This topic is important to study because in modern life there are many things that are not clearly halal or haram, such as digital transactions, investment, and lifestyle. This paper uses a thematic hadith (hadith maudhu'i) approach with library research method. The data were collected from books of hadith, tafsir, and journal articles related to the topic. The result of this study shows that the hadith has a connected chain of narrators (muttashil) and the narrators are known as trustworthy (adl) and accurate in memorization (dhabit). No defect (illat) or irregularity (syadz) is found in the chain, so this hadith is graded as hasan shahih by Imam al-Tirmidhi. In terms of matan, the content of this hadith does not contradict the Qur'an and other hadith, and it is also supported by the famous hadith about halal, haram, and syubhat narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Three scholars, namely Imam al-Nawawi, Ibn Kathir, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, explain that leaving doubtful matters is a form of prevention (sadd al-dhari'ah) to protect religion, self-dignity, and inner peace. Based on this study, it can be concluded that this hadith is still relevant to be applied in modern life, especially as a guideline in making decisions when something is not clearly halal or haram.
