Self-Esteem pada Penderita Penyakit Kanker (Studi Kasus di Rumah Bahagia Pasien Kota Makassar)

This study aims to determine the condition of self-esteem among cancer patients and to identify the factors that support the development and improvement of self-esteem during the treatment process. Cancer does not only affect the physical condition of patients but also influences their psychological well-being, particularly self-esteem, which is often characterized by changes in body image, feelings of inferiority, anxiety, and helplessness. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of self-esteem among cancer patients is needed. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. The research subject was a cancer patient undergoing treatment and residing at Rumah Bahagia Pasien in Makassar City. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that at the initial stage of diagnosis, the patient's self-esteem was at a low level, characterized by feelings of fear, anxiety, and helplessness due to the illness and physical changes experienced. However, throughout the treatment process, the patient's self-esteem improved, influenced by family support, spiritual beliefs, and the supportive environment of Rumah Bahagia Pasien. These factors played an important role in strengthening the aspects of power, significance, virtue, and competence within the patient. Thus, it can be concluded that self-esteem among cancer patients is dynamic and can develop positively when supported by adequate psychosocial assistance, spiritual guidance, and a supportive social environment during the treatment process.
